Motorola G84 5G Review: Best Review With Pros & Cons

The Motorola G84 5G is a fantastic smartphone that excels in every field except gaming. But hey, this isn’t a bad thing! Motorola is simply focusing on a different group of users instead. Sporting 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, this sweet gadget is priced at just Rs 19,999. Plus, it comes in super cool colour options like Marshmallow Blue, Midnight Blue, and Viva Magenta.

Motorola G84 5G Review

The Motorola G84 5G is a great purchase. It boasts pretty good cameras, a battery that lasts all day, a stunning 120Hz pOLED screen display, NFC, a handy 3.5mm audio jack, an impressive stereo speaker, and a whopping 256GB of storage. That being said, if you’re a big gamer, you might want to give this one a miss. Unfortunately, it’s not equipped with a super strong SoC.

Motorola G84 5G

Just remember, although it’s advertised as 12GB RAM, it’s virtual. The real RAM is only 8GB. Nonetheless, finding 8GB RAM and 256GB storage for just Rs 19,999 isn’t something you come across every day. Also important to point out – is that virtual RAM is merely a marketing trick and doesn’t improve performance. So, my friendly advice – give virtual RAM a pass.

It’s a bit of a bummer, but unfortunately, Motorola did not release the 6GB RAM + 128GB Storage version at Rs 17,999 as we hoped.

The Motorola G84 5G is indeed a fantastic phone for your everyday needs. You’re unlikely to encounter any hitches in its performance. Just bear in mind, that its prowess does falter a little when running highly demanding games like COD Mobile or BGMI Mobile.

Alright then, let’s take a closer look at the Motorola G84 5G.

Display and Build

It’s fantastic to find a 6.50-inches 120Hz pOLED display in a smartphone priced at Rs 19,999! The addition of 1300 nits brightness at this cost is an uncommon, but amazing combination.

The panel you’re checking out is a 10-bit HDR10+ – sounds impressive, doesn’t it? Whether you’re a gaming enthusiast or a Netflix addict, you’re going to absolutely love the visual experience, thanks to its broad wine L1 support. However, just a heads up, you won’t find any HDR support for OTT platforms. Nonetheless, this panel still rocks when it comes to stunning picture quality and gameplay.

Just like all optical sensors, the In-display fingerprint sensor functions quite efficiently so there’s no need for any concern. Lastly, think of it as a positive that Motorola has transitioned from having a side-mounted sensor to an in-display one. This is especially considerable since it’s a phone worth 20k.

The construction of the device might not be top-notch, but rest assured, it efficiently performs functions as promised. The body features a plastic back and matching frames. Sadly, Motorola didn’t disclose the kind of glass they used for the front display.

Good news! You can now switch things up with a Leatherback option. However, it’s only available in two luscious shades: Marshmallow Blue and Viva Magenta. If you fancy the Midnight Blue shade, it’s served with a plastic back only.

You have the fantastic choice between a Leather or Plastic back, and guess what? There’s no price difference for both these options. Motorola has also thoughtfully included IP54, making your phone dust and splash-resistant – terrific, right? Here’s more exciting news: The Motorola G84 5G is packed with a 3.5mm audio jack as well as awesome stereo speakers. Enjoy!

The Snapdragon 695 5G is definitely a decent processor, no question about it. It’s just that, being an older SoC, it might not pack enough punch for serious gamers who enjoy marathon gaming sessions without pauses.

In a nutshell, if you’re thinking about getting a gaming-friendly smartphone, I’d advise you to sidestep the Motorola G84 5G. Instead, give some consideration to the recently released Infinix Zero 30 5G. This device runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 8020 and is value-priced at Rs 23,999. It might be just what you’re looking for.

Nonetheless, when it comes to casual gaming, the Motorola G84 5G isn’t a bad choice. Just don’t anticipate a super-strong performance.

Equipped with 14 5G Bands (n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n20, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n77, and n77), the Motorola G84 5G ensures a smooth 5G network experience without any hiccups.

It operates on MyUX based on Android 13, and Motorola has committed to providing one year of OS updates and three years of security updates. The key drawback of this phone is its limited update commitment.

The launch of Android 14 is just a month away, so providing only one OS update at this time doesn’t really seem logical. In more uplifting news, the User Interface (UI) is ad-free! You can expect a neat and clean Android experience, plus some nifty extra features Motorola has woven in there. So, hang tight and look forward to a refreshing and uninterrupted user experience.

In simpler words, the Motorola G84 5G is the perfect smartphone for you if you’re not a power enthusiast or someone who plays games for about 4 to 5 hours every day. However, if you’re an avid gamer, this device might not be the best fit for you. So, proceed with caution if gaming is your passion.

Motorola smartphones have long struggled with their camera capabilities, and unfortunately, the new Motorola G84 5G isn’t much different. But hey, there’s a silver lining – the camera has seen an improvement over the Motorola G82 5G, although it’s not a drastic one. The primary camera boasts a 50MP sensor that’s capable of clicking pretty good pictures. One thing you might appreciate is that it doesn’t overly enhance the colours – it’s more of a fan of maintaining a neutral look.

Motorola did not add any additional white tones to the human subject, which means the images will be truly representative. Now, isn’t that wonderful?

On a sunny day, everything is marvellous and under control. However, when you’re trying to capture low-light scenes, the performance is not quite as stellar. The dynamic range is neither great nor terrible – it needs a bit of a tune-up.

But hey, don’t worry! I have a feeling that the camera tech is only going to get better. After all, Motorola has announced the creation of a new R&D team focused on camera technology. And guess what? They’re engineering it, especially for the Indian users.

Moto G84 5G comes with OIS. It’s functional, sure, but it doesn’t lead the pack and it serves more of a feature-showcasing purpose. You’ll notice that it’s not exactly balanced in any areas of use.

The 8MP ultra-wide lens, on the other hand, is impressively sturdy and produces high-quality images in strong lighting. When you’re taking shots in low light, though, the sensor has quite a hard time keeping up.

Don’t worry, it’s common for most 8MP ultra-wide cameras to under-perform in low light conditions, nothing new there.

Just to mention, the 16MP front camera on this gadget is pretty standard. It pops in a white tone and a sprinkle of extra colours. But hey, that’s usually what we all want, right?

Now sure, tinkering with settings is an option. But, let’s be real, who has the time to spend 10 whole minutes adjusting gizmos just to take one snap? It’s not exactly a go-to move, is it?

The Snapdragon 695 5G can’t handle 4K video recording. So, for the front camera, you’ll get 1080p@30fps, and for the rear camera, it’s 1080p@60fps.

Overall, the camera setup on the Motorola G84 5G isn’t something to write home about but it’s definitely not terrible. Motorola is likely to sort out the dynamic range issue— we just need to be patient and see when they get there.

Audio and Battery

The Motorola G84 5G indeed equips a 3.5mm audio jack and a stereo speaker, an impressive addition considering its price tag. Surprisingly, the audio distribution is unique with 40% volume from the top speaker and the remaining 60% projecting from the bottom speaker. So, no doubt, you’ll be absolutely content with the speaker quality Motorola has integrated into this phone!

Motorola G84 5G

The Motorola G84 5G comes packed with a nifty 5,000mAh battery that typically might see you through 1.5 days. However, for all you high-power users out there who enjoy gaming, bingeing movies, or being on video calls for hours on end, it might need a recharge twice a day. Don’t worry, though. Motorola’s got you covered! In the box, they’ve included a 33W wired charger to keep you up and running.
